S3E7: Claybourne Elder: Actor, Broadway & HBO's Gay Dad

Claybourne Elder is father to a four-year-old son and he's a full-time actor, starring in Broadway's revival of Company and HBO's hit show The Gilded Age.

As Claybourne explains on this week's episode of Gays With Kids the Podcast, finding a work-life balance that fit his busy schedule and prioritized his family was no easy feat.

"Monday's are my day off from the [Broadway] show, but it becomes the day I am frequently on The Gilded Age," Claybourne said on GWK the Podcast.

"What I had to do as I was going into it was really set out my time with my family, because that becomes the most important part," he explained. "I had to say 'This is when I'm going to be with my family.' These hours during the day, my managers and agents can't call me... I've had to say no to a lot of things."

On this episode of Gays With Kids the Podcast, host David Dodge and Claybourne discuss their shared upbringings in Utah's Mormon communities, and Claybourne's experience coming out as gay.

Claybourne also talks about how he and his husband picked IVF and surrogacy as a way to form their family, and how they maintain relationships with their son's surrogate and egg donor.

"We initially had a friend who wanted to be our egg donor, but she backed out at the last minute," he said. "So we ended up getting both our egg and our surrogate from an agency, and that worked really well for us... We're great friends with our surrogate, our son Beau FaceTime's with her."

Claybourne also tells the heartwarming story of how he first entered the world of theater thanks to a stranger in New York City who gave him money for a Broadway ticket, and how the two were fortuitously reunited many years later.
