S3E5: Being A Non-Binary Dad with Jonathan Joly

Jonathan Joly and his family have lived in the public eye for more than a decade as YouTube sensations, presenting as a typical straight couple with four kids. But last year, Jonathan revealed that he is actually a non-binary dad.

Amid the pandemic, Jonathan learned he was not the only person in his family who had been struggling with their gender identity, when his 8-year-old daughter came out to him as trans. So Jonathan decided to tell the world, and his more than 1 million fans online, that he also identifies as non-binary.

"One of my children started to present that she was feeling she was also in the wrong body," Jonathan said. "I think the things she was saying to me were triggering me as well. She was just this little mirror reflecting not me, but she was reflecting Giselle, my female personality. And I'm looking at her thinking, 'Oh my goodness, I can be the parent that I never had... I can be the ally for her.'"

On this episode of GWK the Podcast, Jonathan tells GWK host David Dodge about his childhood in Ireland, his early experiences as a non-binary person, and how he created an imaginary world full of acceptance which inspired his new book; "All My Friends Are Invisible."

"I grew up in 1980s Ireland, extremely conservative and run by the church," Jonathan explained. "I knew any kind of queer was not going to be tolerated."

Jonathan also discusses how he and his wife dealt with the public backlash of his announcement, how they talked to their kids about understanding gender identity, and how he continues to speak out about being a non-binary parent with a trans kid through his online content.
