Nebraska-based military couple Mario and Monte Foreman-Powell have become first-time dads with the help of an altruistic surrogate, the Ellen DeGeneres Show, and the Mosie Baby at-home surrogacy kit.
In 2021, the husbands made an exciting appearance on the Ellen DeGeneres Show to raise money for the surrogacy process. As Mario and Monte tell Gays With Kids the Podcast host Brit Smith, they were thrilled to finally reach the day their daughter Marayla was to be born.
"Originally they said only one of us could be in the delivery room, but we explained we were both the fathers of the child," Monte said. "And they said 'We'll talk to the top doctor and make sure the surrogate's husband is in there to support her too.' The supervisor said she'd been following us since the Ellen Show, and that they'd make whatever they need to happen, happen."
In part 1 of their at-home surrogacy story, Mario and Monte tell the story of how they met, decided to become parents, appeared on the Ellen DeGeneres Show in early 2021, and then connected with their altruistic surrogate Ariel.
In part 2 of their story, the couple discussed their experience with the at-home surrogacy kit made by Mosie Baby, and how they'd been handling the pregnancy and preparation for their daughter's birth.
In GWK the Podcast S3E4: Mario& Monte part 3, the new dads talk about their daughter's birth, the first few weeks of fatherhood, what they need to do to get both their names on their child's birth certificate, and the issues they faced with health insurance coverage.
"[The insurance] only would've covered [the birth] if our surrogate was a dependent," Monte said on GWK the Podcast. "That's an issue we struggled with as a gay male couple, because a lesbian couple would've been covered through the military insurance... They only cover the person who is carrying."
The couple also tells GWK the Podcast host Brit Smith how they stayed stocked up on breast milk during the U.S. formula crisis, how they've been practicing self-care, and how they handled Mother's Day this year.
