Guest post written by Chase Turner
Many of us thought long and hard about what avenues were best to pursue being a dad. For me, fostering to adoption was the selected road. There is no roadmap here, many things that came my way were learned by doing. Along the way, I started wishing I had a better support group or people who could understand what it's like to be gay and attempting to adopt. Often we (people who are LGBT) feel scrutinized and judged for choices that the majority makes but for us there is pushback. Once my adoption was complete, I felt it was necessary that I put pen to paper and write this story, from a gay male perspective.
My goal was to provide a voice in the space of foster care and adoption where there is a void. Additionally, I wanted to provide an authentic look at all facets of the process, from the kids, to the obstacles and challenges that happened within my personal life. I do hope you enjoy and more importantly can relate or prepare yourself for a similar journey.
About the book
"Rollercoasters and Sons" is a book about my journey into fatherhood, the highs and lows, the rigors and fun-side, the whole experience and adventure.
Although not biologically fathered, my three sons have been an integral part of how well I have become as a partner, a son, a friend and a man in general.
My passion for fatherhood and parenting coupled with a great support system from my wonderful partner Terrance, his beautiful mother Kathleen, family and friends have given me the confidence to embrace my sexuality and step up on my lifelong dream of adopting foster kids, giving them love, giving them a home and raising them like they were biologically mine.
Third time was a charm for me, as I finally adopted my son Nylen after a third try. I still however, hold the experience I had with my previously fostered sons Elijah and Caleb very dearly.
About the author
I am a devoted father to Nylen, a loving partner to Terrance, a son to my supportive and wonderful mother Kathleen, as well as a friend and family to many beautiful people, and a great enthusiast for the family's dog Mason.
Outside of writing, my career field is in HR (Human Resource), organization and talent development. Additionally, as a good communicator and passion-driven man that I am, I also serve as a publicly elected official for the Atlanta public schools governance team "Go Team," for the Bolton Academy 2019-2021 academic years.
I have always wanted to be a father and this led to my involvement with fostering and adopted childcare, and on seeing the disparities amongst the youth and education, I took up the charge to build bridges and continue to find ways to give a voice to the challenges that young kids face. I also enjoy helping them leapfrog the roadblocks and obstacles in front of them and with the aid of the "Go Team", I am able to accomplish these challenges.
My family and I currently reside in the Atlanta metropolitan area.
