#MeetGayDads: Danny and James with Their Daughter Kizzy

Nearly eight years ago, Danny and James met online. Danny describes James as his soulmate, and said it was “love at first sight" for them. They were married a year later.

Although both men had always wanted kids and had been thinking about adoption, neither had thought of it as a realistic possibility. Then one day James’ mother asked the two husbands if they would consider adopting her granddaughter Kizzy, as Kizzy’s birth parents were unable to care for her. The girl was living with her grandparents at the time.

Danny and James discussed this surprise opportunity to become dads at length. They reached the following decision: They would first foster Kizzy to allow everybody ample time to bond. Fortunately, soon after they began fostering they were in for a happy surprise: They all bonded with each other almost from the very beginning!

Kizzy, 2 years old at the time, lived with her foster dads for six months before the DHS worker agreed that Danny and James were fit to adopt her. On July 18, 2016, her adoption was finalized: Danny and James became her legal parents.

"She now calls me Daddy and my husband Dad," shared Danny. "Words cannot explain how full with love our hearts are since we became parents."
