Meet Gay Dads: Octavius and Seth with Julian

Meet Octavius, Seth and their son Julian of Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The dads met through an online dating service in 2010, and they immediately connected through their shared desire to start a family. On Christmas day, exactly two years later, Octavius proposed to Seth and they were married in July 2013.

Shortly after getting married, the couple began making plans to grow their family. Like so many others who build families through adoption, their first adoption fell through, leaving the men heartbroken. But a few months later, on Feb 27, 2015, they welcomed Julian Diego into their hearts and into their family. Almost a year later, Octavius and Seth are learning new things from Julian every day, and they are excited to be planning his 1st birthday party.

Gays With Kids: Why did you choose your particular path to fatherhood?

Octavius: We chose adoption because it was slightly more cost effective than surrogacy. We also saw adoption as an amazing opportunity to give a child a home that would otherwise not have one.

Gays With Kids: What do you consider to be the most important lesson you are teaching your son?

Octavius: Our son is 10 months old so he is more or less teaching us patience, understanding, and most of all a new level of love.

Gays With Kids: Please share any advice you may have for others considering a similar path to fatherhood.

Octavius: The best advice we have for anyone considering the adoption path is to ask tons of questions. Unfortunately, there were a lot of surprises that arose during our adoption process. While we considered these obstacles avoidable if we were better informed, the information was not given to us up front. Additionally, be prepared for unexpected costs.

Gays With Kids: Is there anything else you'd like to share about your experiences creating or raising your family?

Octavius: We experienced the highest high and the lowest low of adopting. We were matched originally just 7 days into the process. We proceeded with a young lady for 6 months, only for her to change her mind after the baby was born while we were waiting for her to sign the documents that would make the child ours. Afterwards, we were disheartened by the adoption process and had decided to hold off on creating our family. Life had other plans. When we least expected it, we received a call that we were matched again. This new situation had red flags all over it, but there was something that told us to move forward. A few months later we were bringing our beautiful boy home.
