Meet Gay Dads: Andrew and Sherman with Trey

Andrew and Sherman have been together for seven years and were married in 2011. They have one son, Sherman III (but they call him Trey), born via surrogacy on August 24, 2013. This family of three lives in Cinncinatti, Ohio. Learn a little more about Andrew, Sherman and Trey as part of our Meet Gay Dads series.

Gays With Kids: We love a good love story. How did you two meet?

Andrew: We met online. Our first date was in Pittsburgh. Sherman and I got married in December of 2011 in New York. Marriage had been recognized there since June of that year; one of seven states that had legal marriage at the time. We wanted to be married before we started our family.

Gays With Kids: How did you create your family?

Andrew: Surrogacy.

Gays With Kids: Why did you chose your particular path to fatherhood?

Andrew: We wanted to try surrogacy to have biological children. We have chosen egg donors that we feel combine our attributes as a couple and would look similar to us if we were able to procreate.

Gays With Kids: What do you consider to be the most important lesson you are teaching your child?

Andrew: Manners.

Gays With Kids: Did you always want kids?

Andrew: Yes

Gays With Kids: What names does your kid call you and Sherman?

Andrew: I’m Daddy and Sherman is Papa.

Gays With Kids: Please share any advice you may have for others considering a similar path to fatherhood.

Andrew: Independent legal counsel times three: for you, the surrogate, and an agency if involved.

Gays With Kids: Is there anything else you'd like to share about your experiences creating or raising your family?

Andrew: It took awhile and it was a bit expensive but entirely worth it.
