#GWKThenAndNow: Darin, Carl and Sequan

D.C. couple Darin and Carl met on Match.com in December 2005. Their first real date was on March 4, 2006, at an Eartha Kitt concert at Blues Alley in Georgetown. Follow their #GWKThenAndNow story as they share how they became a family.

Darin and Carl thought they would wait creating a family until they were ready to be parents. They realized later that they were always ready to be parents.

When asked how he created his family, Darin replied, "It was all about choice. We chose each other. Then we chose him. We chose happiness. We chose togetherness."

Darin and Carl were the winners of the Freedom2Wed competition which was created in honor of the passage of the D.C. Marriage Equality Act. A number of leading Washington-area wedding vendors joined forces to offer a same-sex couple the wedding of their dreams. Darin and Carl were contestants, and ultimately the lucky winners!

On March 4, 2011, on the fifth anniversary of their first date, Darin and Carl tied the knot at the Metropolitan Community Church of Washington, D.C.

Through the DC Child and Family Services Agency (CFSA) foster-to-adopt program, Darin and Carl adopted Sequan. On December 23, 2013, the adoption of Timothy Sequan Cox-Henderson was finalized!

2012: the year that Carl and Darin met their son, Sequan.

When we asked Darin what he considers to be the most important lesson he is teaching his son, Darin said, “To be kind to others ... always. And that starts with eye contact and a smile."

Darin has a message for those considering fatherhood: “Do it. Do it for you. Do it for them. Do it because it's now possible. Do it to feel another kind of love like none you've experienced before. Do it to help make the world, your world, better.”

Darin shared with us that only a few weeks ago Sequan had given Carl a gift that he will have forever. Sequin had said, “Papi, you make my heart smile.” Darin said, "Our son gives us the gift of his love every day. We are so blessed to be a family."
