GWK The Podcast Gay Dad Influencers

GWK the Podcast S3E1: Gay Dads Turned Social Media Influencers

Gay dads who become social media influencers do more than just create cute family-oriented content we all love. On this episode of Gays With Kids the Podcast, our guests also normalize queer families and increase the visibility of gay dads.

Aside from managing the demands of major online followings, social media influencers Burton Buffaloe (@bbbuffaloe) Dustin Smith (@dustin_patrick_smith) and José Rolón (@nycgaydad) also stay busy with their own businesses, appearing in magazines and on TV, running a farm (!) and of course raising their awesome kids.

So how do they balance it all, is it as perfect as it seems on IG, and why do they do it?

In this episode of Gays With Kids the Podcast, social media influencer husbands Dustin and Burton open up about choosing to have kids after Burton was subjected to conversion therapy.

"When I came out, I ended up having to go through conversion therapy, and I went weekly to have deliverance sessions where I was having 'demons cast out' of me," Burton said. "So that really kind of put me in a dark place in my life where I spiraled into depression, and I never thought I would see myself on the other side of that, where I would be married happily, with kids, being so public."

On this episode of GWK, Dustin and Burton also touch on their family life on and offline, their experience moving to a farm near Raleigh NC amid the pandemic, and what it means for their kids' futures for the dads to have family-centric social media accounts.

Single gay dad-of-three and social media influencer José opens up on GWK the Podcast about the difficult decision he faced about whether or not to have twins the week after his husband suddenly died.

"At ten weeks, we found out we were pregnant with twins. The following week, my husband went on a business trip, and he unexpectedly passed away," José explained. "On top of all the grieving I had to go through, I also had six days to make a decision whether to follow through on the pregnancy, because at 12 weeks you can't make that decision anymore... It hit me that my son just lost his father, and what if something happened to me? I definitely didn't want to leave him alone in this world. So, not only did I follow through with the pregnancy, I also announced that we were pregnant while giving Tim's eulogy."

José also talks about how he balances being a single dad, a social media influencer, and a professional wedding planner with a new TV show in the works, how he deals with backlash from critics online, and how he decides what does and does not appear on his social media channels.
