On Wednesday, April 9, Prince George, the son of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prince William and Kate Middleton, will meet Isabella, the daughter of gay fathers Jared and Ryan Mullen. The meeting will happen in the context of a visit William and Kate will pay to the New Zealand parent support organization Plunket.
The gay dads, one of whom, Jared, hails from Oregon, USA, the other, Ryan, from Australia, were chosen as representatives of the growing numbers of same-sex parents who avail themselves of Plunket’s services.
All ten children chosen to meet Prince George were born within weeks of his birthday, July 22, 2013.
The playgroup, George’s first public engagement, will take place in Government House, Wellington, the home of the Governor-General.
Royal watchers assume the conversation between the royal couple and the gay fathers will touch on such topics as sleeping through the night, first smiles, and frequency of diaper changes; a discussion of breast-feeding is considered less likely.
