Buttigieg Introduces Tucker Carlson To "The Concept Of Bottle Feeding"

New dad, U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg took a moment this week to gently clap back at Fox News host Tucker Carlson, who made another one of his famously ignorant comments, this time about what it takes to raise a newborn baby (or two.)

During a live airing of his cable TV show this week, Carlson griped about Sec. Buttigieg doing what many new parents do; taking paternity leave to spend time with his newborn twins.

Unsurprisingly, Carlson mocked the gay dad for taking time off to care for his newborn babies.

"Parental leave, they call it," Carlson quipped. "Trying to figure out how to breastfeed. No word on how that went."

Carlson's out-of-touch belief that only breastfeeding people should care for kids did not go unnoticed, and neither did his homophobic undertone.

NPR’s Davie Gura quickly pointed out that Carlson never had a problem when his (non-breastfeeding) colleague Todd Piro took six weeks of parental leave from Fox News in April to care for his infant daughter.

"Did Tucker Carlson mock his own Fox News colleagues in the same fashion?" asked MSNBC anchor Stephanie Ruhle rhetorically.

Sec. Buttigieg later appeared on MSNBC with Nicole Wallace, where he bluntly addressed Carlson's misogynistic comment.

"Look, in his case, I guess he just doesn't understand the concept of bottle feeding, let alone the concept of paternity leave," Buttigieg responded. "But what's really strange is that, you know, this is from a side of the aisle that used to claim the mantle of being pro-family."

Wallace, responded, “It feels homophobic to suggest that you were trying to figure out breastfeeding. I mean, it feels dirtier than that. How does this attack land for you and [your husband] Chasten?”

“Well, look, this attack is coming from a guy who has yet to explain his apparent approval for the assassination of Harvey Milk,” said Buttigieg, referring to Carlson’s yearbook saying he was in the “Dan White Society.” (Dan White was the man who assassinated gay politician Harvey Milk.) “So, obviously, we know that there are some dark places where some of these attitudes come from. But I also note that that doesn’t speak for the country. I don’t think that even speaks for most people on the other side of the aisle from the party that I belong to.”

Buttigieg also went on CNN Sunday to explain that any new parent, regardless of sex or gender, can in fact care for a newborn child without lactating.

"As you might imagine, we're bottle-feeding and doing it at all hours of the day and night," Buttigieg told CNN's, Jake Tapper.

"I'm not going to apologize to Tucker Carlson or anyone else for taking care of my premature newborn infant twins," Buttigieg added. "It's work that every American ought to be able to do when they welcome a new child into their family."
