What Happens After Receiving Eggs From an Egg Donor?

Dr. Daniel Skora, Fertility Specialists of Texas what steps come after the egg retrieval process.

What is the IVF process after the egg retrieval?

After retrieving the eggs they are moved into the embryology lab where they are fertilized using a technique called ICSI (intracytoplasmic sperm injection ). This is a process in which we inject a sperm from your frozen sample into each egg, this ensures fertilization in a majority of cases. We then place those embryos into an incubator where they stay for the next five or six days. The embryologist will check those embryos on day one to tell how many have fertilized, again on day three to tell you how many have reached the cleavage stage and finally on day five or six, that is called the blastocyst stage. On day five or six something can be done called pre-implantation genetic testing for aneuploidy. The embryologist takes a sample of the cells that become the placenta and sends them off for genetic analysis to tell us if an embryo is normal with the correct number of chromosomes, no additions or deletions that would lead to things like Down Syndrome, miscarriage or non-pregnancy, as well as if it's a boy or a girl embryo, so you can select sex if you desire. The embryos are all going to be frozen after they've reached that stage to be ready to be used in your gestational carrier
