What Does IVF Entail?

What is IVF?

Dr. Jerald S. Goldstein of Fertility Specialists of Texas explains the process the IVF process and how it results in a higher number of  successful pregnancies.

What does the IVF process look like?

When you go through the process of IVF, an embryo is formed with equal amounts of DNA from the egg and the sperm. Each of us has unique sequences of DNA that comes from both the egg and the sperm. This DNA is organized into genes, which are organized into structures called chromosomes. We have 23 pairs of chromosomes. The chromosomes 1 through 22 are numbered based on the size of the chromosome, with the 23rd pair of chromosomes called the sex chromosomes. These chromosomes are labeled xx and xy, these are what determines if the baby is a boy and a girl.

How successful is IVF?

Embryos that are developed through the process of IVF have a higher chance of implanting, have a higher chance of a live birth rate, and a reduced risk of miscarriage in embryos that are chromosomally normal. Embryos that have a normal number of chromosomes are called euploid. However, embryos that have an abnormal number of chromosomes, such as 47 chromosomes or 45 chromosomes, are called incloid embryos. These embryos have a reduced chance of implanting and resulting in a baby. The medical advancements in understanding genetics and screening for genetic diseases, as well as screen embryos to see if they are chromosomally normal, has been very helpful in improving outcomes. All of these advancements makes it more likely that you will be able to take home a baby!
