What to consider when choosing a surrogate

What Qualities Should I Look For In A Surrogate?

How Do I Choose a Surrogate?

Ashley Myers of Same Love Surrogacy breaks down the important characteristics to look for when selecting a gestational carrier.

Qualities to Consider in Choosing a Surrogate

The first trait to look for in a surrogate is somebody that can openly communicate. It's no secret that surrogacy is a complicated process with tons of moving parts, so it is crucial that your surrogate can easily and effectively communicate. It is important that she can give you updates on where she is during the process. This includes updates on doctor's appointments, how she's feeling and what she hopes to get out of the journey. A strong communicator is essential when establishing what type of contact you will all have post-birth. Surrogacy is an emotional process that bonds individuals, so it is important to make it clear what the expectations are and determine what everyone is comfortable with.

Another quality to look for is somebody who has a strong support network. It is essential to any journey that the surrogate has individuals close to them that they can rely on. People who make up the surrogate's support network will be caring individuals who are supportive and are willing to jump in and help her during the process. Whether that be helping her take care of her own children during doctor's appointments or to help out around the house. Having this network of support allows for the whole journey to become smoother.

The last quality may seem obvious but, look for a surrogate who is healthy. Before you choose a surrogate they will have to be screened by the surrogacy agency and often times the IVF clinic will also conduct a screening. This screening is to establish that the surrogate will be a good match for you. They look for surrogates who have multiple proven successful births, no concerning health issues and someone who is doing it for the right reasons. Most of the time your surrogacy agency will not let you choose a surrogate they know will not work for you.

Some other considerations are somebody who is willing to adhere to certain religious requests, such as certain dietary restrictions. These dietary requests can also include things such as only organic food. All of your extra concerns and requirements should be known to your surrogate beforehand, communication is key!
