Can You Do IVF While HIV Positive With An Undetectable Viral Load?

How Does IVF While Being HIV Positive Work?

Dr. Mark Leondires, Reproductive Medicine Associates of Connecticut discusses the questions surrounding being HIV positive with an undetectable viral load and the IVF process.

Can I still become a dad while HIV positive?

We can absolutely move forward with dads-to-be that are HIV positive or Hepatitis positive. It really depends on your care and your viral load. If you want to move forward as a dad-to-be and you're HIV positive you need to be cleared by your HIV physician first and we're going to want you to have an undetectable viral load.

How can a HIV physician help?

In their laboratory, these physicians wash the sperm specimen and then investigate the sperm specimen itself for the presence of the HIV virus. This process lets them determine if the sperm specimen has an undetectable viral load.

How common is an undetectable viral load?

It turns out two out of three specimens in dads-to-be with undetectable viral loads do not have the presence of the virus in the specimen. This means the physicians would then find those specimens, then cryopreserve them and then those specific specimens will be shipped to your IVF facility.

Does this pose a risk to the gestational carrier?

By using a third-party that specifically focuses on inspecting sperm samples to determine that they do not contain the virus, you can allow them to counsel your gestational carrier. To help them feel reassured that there is no chance for them to be infected with HIV by working with you as a genetic intended father.
