Can I still have children if I'm HIV positive?
You can absolutely move forward with family building if you're HIV positive. What we need to do is work with your doctor to make sure your viral load is undetectable. We need to make sure that you're taking your medicines and we're going to connect you with a facility that's going to screen your sperm specimen and cryopreserve it for use in our IVF laboratory.
Does being HIV positive pose a risk to my gestational carrier?
The same facility that screened your sperm specimen is going to also be responsible for talking to your gestational carrier and reassuring them that the chances for viral transmission are essentially zero. This facility will also screen your gestational carrier once a trimester and postpartum to confirm that she did not get HIV during the pregnancy where she carried your child.
How common is an undetectable viral load?
It turns out that two out of three sperm specimens in guys that are viral load undetectable do not have presence of the HIV virus in them. The laboratory will then cryopreserve the specimens that do not have evidence of HIV and they will ship those to your IVF facility. Those specimens are then used for embryo creation in the IVF laboratory.
