Finding a fertility doctor and fertility center for international queer parents

How to Find a Fertility Doctor & Clinic as an International Patient

Dr. Allison K. Rodgers of Fertility Centers of Illinois breaks down the steps international intended parents should take when researching and finding a fertility clinic in the United States.

Finding a fertility clinic for international intended parents

The first criteria you should look for in a fertility clinic is that they are very experienced. A highly experienced clinic is often doing thousands of embryo transfers a year with excellent success rates. These clinics will be extremely familiar with working closely with egg donors and gestational carriers. The better the experience of the clinic, the easier and smoother the whole process will go.

In America, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), has very specific guidelines that must be followed. A highly trained and reputable clinic will know and understand all of the regulations and always abide by them. The FDA requires certain screenings of egg donors, sperm donors, and gestational carriers to ensure that there are no infectious diseases being transferred.

Another consideration when selecting a clinic is where it is located. Surrogacy laws vary state-to-state and researching your state's laws can help dictate whether or not that state is a good choice to pursue surrogacy in. Choosing a favorable state will help ensure your parental rights, making the legal process much simpler. Besides state laws, it is also good to consider transportation. Is it near a large airport? Is it easily accessible? These are all things to consider when selecting a fertility center.

Another consideration is the success rates of the clinic. You can visit Sart.org, a website run by the FDA and the Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology, which will give you in-depth data into the number of cases each clinic handles and their overall success rates.

Finally, go with your gut feeling. If a clinic doesn't appear friendly or LGBTQ+ affirming, that is a pretty good sign that your journey with them will be unpleasant. You are creating a family and this time in your life should be exciting and filled with joy. Find a fertility center that is just as excited as you are to be helping you on your journey.
