How Do I Start My Surrogacy Journey?

Kristen Hanson, Simple Surrogacy discusses the first steps in becoming a dad through surrogacy and where to begin for those ready to take start their journey.

Where should I Start?

The good news is you've already started your surrogacy journey just by being here and starting the research. The research is probably the most important part of your surrogacy journey. You'll want to research clinics, agencies, attorneys, and you want to find people that you can trust. You'll want to learn all you can about the journey. One really good way to get started with doing that is to have a zoom call with the agency or clinic that you're thinking about hiring for your journey. They'll be able to give you a free consultation in most cases and you'll be able to ask all the questions that you have about your particular case in your particular journey. Another really good thing to do is to read everything you can find on surrogacy and about egg donations so that you can really educate yourself about the process. Then you'll know what questions you want to ask when you're talking to your clinic and to your agency. How do I get started?

Should I start with an attorney first?

Occasionally, some people do start with an attorney if they have a family friend who does surrogacy or reproductive law. But, generally speaking, that's for people who already have a surrogate in the family that they're going to use or know a donor that they're going to use. Then that might be a case where you would want to start with an attorney who's a reproductive law attorney. But in most cases, people start with an agency because they're the guide throughout the whole journey and they're really a good place to start to learn about what the process entails for you up to speed.
