Gay Dads Featured in New AT&T Ad

AT&T is the latest company to feature gay dads in their advertising so far this year!

I hope this becomes the norm that we regularly see brand advertising featuring gay dads. And I hope it becomes so much the norm that I don't feel compelled to write about it anymore!

We're getting there, little by little.

Mega-brand AT&T just released a short video/commercial that features two protective dads making sure that their babysitter is equipped to take care of their children. What strikes me most about this spot is the normalcy. These are simply two normal parents, regardless of gender, who are making sure their children will be properly watched. No stereotypes, no big messaging, no big deal. Just two men being protective parents.

New Dads Tom Daley and Dustin Lance Black Vow to Keep Images of Son Off of Social Media

Tom Daley and Dustin Lance Black say they plan to keep their son off of social media until he has a say in the matter.

If you follow Tom Daley and Dustin Lance Black on Instagram, you'll know they're are the latest to join the ranks of famous gay dads when their son, Robbie Ray, was born via surrogacy in June 2018. But what you haven't seen is any evidence of the baby boy, beyond a picture of a bassinet here, or a stroller pic there. The reason? The plan to keep their son off of their (widely followed) social media accounts.

The couple explained their decision in an interview on BBC Radio several months back. "We have not shown his face on any social media platform and we plan to continue to do that," said Daley. "Mainly because there are so many members of our family yet to meet him. We want people to meet him in person first before they see him on social media."

Lance followed up with a joke: "He's so cute, he's going to make every other parent in the world feel terrible," he said. "He's so adorable, like why would we do that?"

So far, the dads have stayed very true to their vow. So when might their adoring public be able to catch a glimpse of the famous dads' son? When "he has proper representation," Lance joked again.

Sir Elton John Announces End of Touring to Spend More Time with His Children

Sir Elton John announced an end to his touring days at a concert in Lost Angeles to spend more time with his husband and his sons.

Sir Elton John, who is 71 years old, announced at the end of his show at the Los Angele Staples Center that he will no longer be touring. The reason? To spend more time with his "beautiful" children, Zachary and Elijah, who are seven and five respectively.

"Through all the wonderful years, all those millions of memories, I've had so much applause for a million lifetimes," John said. "And the reason I'm stopping because my life has changed now I have beautiful children, I want to be with them."

According to an article in the Daily Mail, John had warned this was coming. "My life revolves around them now," he said in a previous interview. "Taking them to school, getting them to bed, being there for them, being there at weekends."

But fear not, Rocket Man fans. John isn't saying goodbye to performing, just touring. "It's not that I don't want to play again...but I don't know when I'm ever going to tour."

"I Got Milk" Has Now Got Gay Dads

"Milk" just released a new campaign featuring real families, including gay dads.

The original "Got Milk?" campaign that launched in 1993 has gone down in marketing history as one of the most successful programs in branding. After the initial launch of a classic tv commercial that introduced the concept, the campaign later centered around celebrity spokespeople wearing a milk mustache. In the world of marketing, the longevity of the campaign is indeed one for the record books.

Well now it looks like "Got Milk?" is getting a bit more real with a new campaign featuring real life moments with a variety of families, sans any celebrities.

In the campaign, we see families of all types, including gay dads. Gay dads! No single type of family is singled out, which I think adds to the power of the messaging. By normalizing all different kinds of families, the "brand" is showing inclusion and reality.

And for that I say thank you to milk!

Gay Dads Featured on Cover of Parents Magazine for First Time

Fitness guru Shaun T. and his husband Scott Blokker are the first gay dads to be featured on the cover of Parents Magazine

I literally never thought I'd see the day. Literally.

Gay fathers on the cover of Parents Magazine! Gay fathers being celebrated in a "main stream" publication about being parents. Gay fathers!

I don't want to get overly dramatic here, but this is a milestone. A massive cultural milestone.

Sure, gay dads have come a long way in being accepted in our popular culture, but to my eye we've never been on the cover of a big popular parenting magazine celebrating our parenting skills. As if we are the norm.

We are now - thanks to Parents Magazine.

This is a particular milestone for me because I have a bit of a history with the magazine and with parenting publications in general. My first job out of grad school was in brand marketing at Johnson's Baby Products where I did indeed run advertising in this particular magazine. Back then though we only featured married, straight couples. There were no other kinds of parents to feature back in the day! And if I'm to be really honest, they were generally white, married, straight couples.

I distinctly remember one photo shoot where I forgot to put a wedding ring on the "husband's" finger and we had to reshoot it. No photoshop back then!

Now admittedly this was before I was a dad and before I was out, but as the years went by and I embraced my own journey as a gay dad, there were no role models or pop culture markers to say that I (and other gay dads) were accepted. There were no Andy Cohens publicly making baby announcements. We were alone on our parenting.

It was hard. There was a constant barrage of straight parenting norms that constantly reminded us that we were different.
Not any more! Being a gay dad, or any dad, is now simply being a parent. A good parent. A loving parent. And we have Parents Magazine to thank for the reminder and endorsement, with hopefully more to come.

And I can't help but think, and actually know, that this kind of normalization will inspire the next generation of gay dads who will simply accept, without hesitation, that fatherhood as a gay man is a real, accepted, and normal option.

Bravo!

Titled, "What Does a Princess Really Look Like?" the book differentiates itself from most other LGBT picture books. Namely, the story doesn't explain, clarify or justify its gay characters (who are dads). The characters are just a natural part of the story - the new normal.

Gay dad Mark Loewen's children's book debut made a splash in the children's LGBT literature pool this year.

Titled, "What Does a Princess Really Look Like?" the book differentiates itself from most other LGBT picture books. Namely, the story doesn't explain, clarify or justify its gay characters (who are dads). The characters are just a natural part of the story - the new normal.
