Tom Daley announced recently that he has teamed up with the BBC to bring a documentary about his experiences with surrogacy to the small screen. The Olympic diver, along with husband Dustin Lance Black, welcomed a baby boy to their family via surrogacy this past summer.
Daley hopes to use the opportunity to provide an in-depth look into a typical surrogacy journey, from the medical requirements to the legal and financial aspects that such arrangements require.
The documentary will largely focus on the use of surrogacy in the U.K., according to Deadline, where the practice is legal but highly regulated. But Daley will also travel to California, where rules are much more permissive, and to countries where the practice is still illegal.
The documentary is set to debut in 2019. We'll be sure to tune in, and keep you posted!
This week, Olympic diver Tom Daley and filmmaker Dustin Lance Black, who are new dads to Robbie Ray this past summer via surrogacy, took to Instagram to announce an exciting development: they will be serving as the latest brand ambassadors for Pampers.
"Since Robbie came into our lives, we've become much more picky about stuff we buy and use," Daley wrote to his 2 million followers on Instagram. "When it comes to Robbie, there's no compromise, which is why I've chosen to partner with @PampersUK_IRE."
Dustin Lance Black, for his part, wrote to his 331,000 followers: "I'm so pleased to be working alongside @TomDaley with @PampersUK_IRE for the launch of their new Pure Protection nappies and wipes."
Whether or not Pampers is your preferred diaper and wipe brand, we here at Gays With Kids commend the company for partnering with these two inspiring gay dads. After announcing they were expecting a son via surrogacy on their respective Instagram accounts earlier this year, the famous couple were subjected to a prejudiced backlash at the hands of conservative commenters online.
Pampers, in taking on the gay dads as brand ambassadors, is opening themselves up to the same type of rightwing trolling. But clearly the brand recognizes that advocating for equality for LGBTQ families is not only a smart business move, it's also just the right thing to do.
In an interview with Metro.co.uk, the dads commended the brand for recognizing the importance of including the experience of LGBTQ parents in its advertising.
"It was one of those interesting things where they called us, and first of all – it's absolutely amazing that they called us, a same-sex family," said Tom Daley. "There was something really incredible about that. But not only that, it's wanting what's best for your baby, and that's why we trust Pampers and their Pure products."
Dustin Lance Black added, "It's opening a window to what our family looks like, and I think at the end of the day, it will be clear that we have the same concerns as every other family. 'You've got to feed them, you've got to change the diapers, you've got to love them. And I was really moved that they asked."
