Adoption is the social, emotional, and legal process during which a birth mother and/or father relinquishes their parental rights — allowing an adoptive parent, or parents, to become the legal guardian(s) of an infant, child, or sibling group. There are three main paths to adopt in the United States: domestic infant adoption, foster-adopt, and international adoption.

There are many adoption and foster care agencies, but not all are LGBTQ-friendly, let alone LGBTQ-competent. Choosing the right agency to partner with is among the most important of all the decisions you’ll make throughout your entire journey. We know this process can be quite stressful, complicated and time-consuming. That’s why we’re proud to offer our Partners to Fatherhood program, where we’ve done all the vetting for you! We feature only the best of the best organizations – those that enjoy long and proven track records passionately supporting LGBTQ+ family building. We encourage you to click on the links below to learn more about these organizations.
Most adoption and foster agencies only service their local state or province. If you are interested in pursuing adoption or foster care and you are not covered by any of these agencies, our partnership with Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption (DTFA) will connect you with a vetted agency in your local area by completing this brief form.
